“How far can you cross the line before the monster you hunt is no longer the one in front of you?”
From tracking a lost child to hunting for a serial killer, Dannie Bauer doesn’t know how to quit. But what happens when unrelenting determination crosses the line between right and wrong?
Dannie and her bloodhound, Forrest, are called out to search for a teammate of Dannie’s who vanished. Another girl disappears and the FBI's Serial Killer Unit confirms what Dannie's instincts already knew: a predator is selecting victims with chilling precision.
Small-town Chardon, Ohio, has become a hunting ground. And every lead points to someone who knows the terrain, knows the victims, knows exactly how to stay invisible.
The search escalates into a hunt for a vicious serial killer.
Until Dannie gets too close.

Sometimes, confronting evil comes at a cost . . .

THE HUNTER is a dark, female-led crime thriller where a K9 search and rescue handler becomes a woman detective willing to sacrifice everything to stop a serial killer. Perfect for readers who crave:

  • Morally complex heroines who refuse to back down

  • Serial killer hunt novels with relentless tension

  • K9 search and rescue fiction with authentic detail

  • Women detective thrillers that don't pull punches

  • Psychological suspense that questions how far is too far

If you devoured Silence of the Lambs, The Marsh King's Daughter, or Still Missing, this thriller will grip you until the final page.

Start the hunt. One click to begin.

When a child vanishes, Dannie Bauer, the youngest Deputy in the Geauga County Sheriff’s Department, pushes past procedure and politics, chasing leads others dismiss.

But a missing child is just the beginning.

What she uncovers isn’t a single predator—it’s a coordinated network trafficking children beyond the reach of local law enforcement. The deeper she digs, the more resistance she faces—from her own department, from outside agencies, and from the people who want the investigation buried.

Her pursuit costs her everything. Stripped of her badge and her reputation, Dannie is forced to choose: walk away and rebuild her life… or continue the hunt alone, without authority and without limits.

With the lives of trafficked women and children at stake, are there ethical limits she won’t cross?

BIO

After 23 years working around the world in emergency relief and international development, I left that field and made my living as a technical writer for 15 years. I retired in 2022.

As a technical writer, my goal was to convey a concept, principle, or dimension in words that were compelling and communicated with a clarity that profoundly impacted the reader.

My goal in storytelling remains the same, along with the hope that my writing both entertains and poses ethical questions that prompt the reader to think.

The inspiration for The Hunter, a serial killer thriller set in Chardon, Ohio,

stemmed from my daughter’s experience as a member of a K9 search and rescue club. I helped the club by being a victim during K9 training (and writing grants for funding). As a victim, I would leave a trail, unknown to the handlers, and then hide or conceal myself. The various dogs, trailing and tracking, would then have to find me. This inspired me to write a story about K9 Search and Rescue. I must emphasize that there is no relationship between the character Dannie and my

daughter. One is fictional, and the other quite real – but totally different. Forrest, however, was a real bloodhound and a trailing K9. All other characters in the book are fictional and were created from my imagination.

I live in Fort Myers, Florida, with my love, Betty, and our boss, a ten-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I travel to Chardon a few times a year.
